Goleta now weighs in with a shower program.\u00a0 On the downside, activist and poet Peter Marin reports (<a href=\"http:\/\/radiolibre.org\/brb\/brb141123.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/radiolibre.org\/brb\/<wbr \/>brb141123.mp3<\/a> 1 hour, 11 minutes into the audio file) Santa Barbara is following Santa Cruz&#8217;s bad example in passing anti-homeless (e.g. anti-sitting) laws on its main tourist thoroughfaire State Street.<br \/>\nSanta Cruz, meanwhile has stacked its Pacific Avenue with gun-toting cops, uniformed First Alarm &#8220;security&#8221; thugs, and &#8220;happy&#8221; Hosts adding phony public safety hysteria to its usual &#8220;clean &#8217;em out for Xmas&#8221; program.\u00a0 City homeless haters are\u00a0 now planning to arm these &#8220;Get Movin&#8217;!&#8221; mannequins with further with &#8220;no conviction needed&#8221; stay-away powers on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_420226994\"><span class=\"aQJ\">December 9th<\/span><\/span> at City Council.\u00a0 (See &#8220;<strong>Stay-Away Stupidity Not <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_420226995\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Tuesday&#8217;s<\/span><\/span> 11-25 Council Agenda<\/strong>&#8221; at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indybay.org\/newsitems\/2014\/11\/24\/18764553.php\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.indybay.org\/<wbr \/>newsitems\/2014\/11\/24\/18764553.<wbr \/>php<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 No doubt, the hope is to intimidate homeless people out of town, but it&#8217;s likely only to increase jail and policing costs ).<br \/>\nHey, what with drenching rain and dropping temperatures, who needs additional showers and shelter.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no plan on deck other than the usual well-intentioned pleas of a few activists to provide regular warming centers.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h1 style=\"font-size: 24px; font-weight: normal; color: #000000; font-family: Georgia,Times,serif;\">Goleta Council Approves Pilot Program to Provide Mobile Shower for Homeless<\/h1>\n<p style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000; font-size: 13px;\">By Joshua Molina, Noozhawk Staff Writer |\u00a0<a style=\"color: #a31c1c; text-decoration: none;\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/JECMolina\" target=\"_blank\">@JECMolina<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0<span style=\"color: #990000;\">Published on 12.02.2014 6:49 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Georgia,Times,serif; font-size: 13px;\">\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Homeless people will have a place to take a shower under a pilot program offered by the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #a31c1c; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofgoleta.org\/index.aspx?page=424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">City of Goleta<\/a>\u00a0and an advocacy group.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">In partnership with the group\u00a0<a style=\"color: #a31c1c; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.interfaithinitiativesbc.org\/projects\/project-heal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">HEAL (Hope, Empowerment &amp; Love)<\/a>, Goleta will provide space outside the\u00a0\u00a0<a style=\"color: #a31c1c; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thegvcc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Goleta\u00a0Valley Community Center<\/a>\u00a0for a mobile shower for the homeless.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-top-width: 1px; border-top-style: solid; border-top-color: #cccccc; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: #cccccc; padding: 2px;\">\n<div>\n<div>The shower facilities will be located inside a trailer, a two-room unit, that has a shower, stall, sink and toilet.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The trailer is self-contained with its own water tank, heater, wastewater holding tank and air conditioner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The Goleta City Council voted 5-0 <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_420226996\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Tuesday<\/span><\/span> to approve the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;I think it is a fabulous idea,&#8221; new Goleta\u00a0<a style=\"color: #a31c1c; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofgoleta.org\/index.aspx?page=1067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mayor Paula Perotte<\/a>\u00a0said. &#8220;I really believe it is the right thing to do. I can&#8217;t even imagine going days and days without a shower.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Showers for the homeless people would be limited to about five minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Initially, the mobile shower would be open one day per month, over a three-month period, beginning <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_420226997\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Dec. 29<\/span><\/span>. The trailer would be parked in a rear parking lot of the community center, just north of the tennis courts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The project would be a pilot program for three months, but eventually HEAL activists want to have the trailer visit regular sites, including St. Michael&#8217;s University Church and St. Mark&#8217;s Catholic Church, both in Isla Vista.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The hours would be from <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_420226998\"><span class=\"aQJ\">11 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/span><\/span>, and homeless people would have to make an appointment to use the facilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 17px;\">HEAL activists said they do not tolerate intoxicated individuals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOTE BY NORSE:\u00a0 Santa Barbara and its neighbor Goleta are several (token) steps ahead of Santa Cruz.\u00a0\u00a0 Santa Barbara has had a Safe Parking program on government lots for some time.
