HUFF activists staged a small protest against ongoing police “closed door, closed windows’ policies around last month’s Sean Arlt slaying on the sidewalk outside the main police station at Laurel and Center streets Thursday afternoon (11-10). \u00a0 Also on the HUFF agenda: on-going harassment and citation of poor and homeless people outside, and general police refusal to respond to Public Records Act requests on issues of SCPD<\/b><\/span> force, transparency, selective enforcement, and surveillance.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Two journalists came and wrote about the protest, also taking pictures.

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

A third protest is planned for November 19th<\/span><\/span> at the Town Clock at 1:30 PM<\/span><\/b>. \u00a0 We’re hoping to provide coffee and perhaps something to munch.\u00a0 Also on the agenda–a speak-out, petition drive, and possible march to confront police stonewalling and politician indifference<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

SANTA CRUZ >> In a week that\u2019s seen thousands of protesters descend on downtown Santa Cruz to protest the presidential election of Donald Trump, Thursday\u2019s<\/span><\/span> protest of the officer-involved shooting death of Sean Arlt seemed like an afterthought.<\/p>\n

A handful of activists gathered at the corner of Laurel and Center streets and called for the release of information related to the Oct. 16 incident<\/a> in which Arlt, a 32-year-old father who suffered from mental illness, was shot and killed by a Santa Cruz police officer after threatening four police officers with a 5-foot metal bow rake.<\/p>\n

The demonstrators brandished signs that read \u201cBan Guns 4 Cops\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t shoot, I have an illness.\u201d They also jogged into traffic to hand out fliers that read, \u201cEnough Waiting! Turn Up the Heat! Who Killed Sean Arlt?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy can\u2019t the District Attorney\u2019s Office release the name of the officer involved or the audio and video related to the shooting now? Why do they have to wait until the investigation is completed?\u201d said organizer Robert Norse. \u201cIt gives the impression they\u2019re concealing something.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel has explained<\/a> that recorded evidence from the incident, in addition to the officer\u2019s identification, will be released to the public by the District Attorney\u2019s Office in less than three months.<\/p>\n

Norse is the founder of Homeless United for Friendship and Freedom, or HUFF<\/a>. His organization has added the officer-involved shooting of Arlt onto its long list of grievances against the Santa Cruz Police Department.<\/p>\n

\u201cHUFF has had longstanding concerns about the SCPD\u2019s relationship with the homeless and the poor,\u201d Norse said. \u201cWe see Sean\u2019s death as just another example of local police abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

John and Patricia Colby identify as emotionally disabled and live in their van with two cats. The siblings said they were demonstrating Thursday to pressure the Santa Cruz police for full disclosure in the Arlt case.<\/p>\n

The pair also have complaints about the Santa Cruz County Adult Mental Health Services, which they said provides poor treatment to the emotionally disabled.<\/p>\n

\u201cCounty Mental Health is quick to medicate people to make them easy to manage,\u201d said John Colby, 52. \u201cPeople are not willing to go to see them at Emeline for this reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t listen,\u201d said Patricia Colby, 55. \u201cThat\u2019s why I get my medication overseen by a treating physician \u2014 because I don\u2019t trust the county.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel has said his department is committed to transparency in the investigation, we still have not gotten the name of the officer that shot and killed Sean, the audio, and video of the killing! The chief now claims that he has to wait for District Attorney’s office to finish their investigation!<\/p>\n

Sean Arlt , who suffered from mental illness was shot and killed last month on October 16th.<\/p>\n
