Salt Lake City a few years ago developed a media reputation for “curing homelessness”\u00a0 (See<\/span>http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/nation\/article\/Salt-Lake-City-a-model-for-S-F-on-homeless-5587357.php<\/span><\/a><\/span>, \u00a0<\/span><\/span>http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/12\/10\/459100751\/utah-reduced-chronic-homelessness-by-91-percent-heres-how<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/utah-is-ending-homelessness-by-giving-people-homes\/<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 ).

For <\/span>Santa Cruz scene, authorities have a strange “cure”:\u00a0 To turn the issue upside down.\u00a0 The problem isn’t a steeply rising cost of living, housing for the rich, and discriminatory laws and enforcement policies against those outside.\u00a0 It’s the presence of the visible poor, particularly those trying to publicly protest at City Hall or provide client-run services outside the Post Office.

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

City Council members take no action to restore shelter and food services in the near term.\u00a0 They empower\u00a0<\/span>their City Mangler, that is, City Manager Martin Bernal,\u00a0 in his campaign to wall off and\/or drive away homeless sleeping people.\u00a0 A recent closed door “Performance Evaluation”\u00a0 apparently found no problem with Bumcrush Bernal’s <\/span>year-long record of harassment and public space removal around City Hall. \u00a0<\/span>
\nInstead of providing resources for unhoused folks outside who struggle nightly such as portapotties, garbage pick-up’s, and other basic needs, the Chase’s City Council sends out Rangers to steal homeless property, issue stay-away orders, and provide bogus “obstructing the sidewalk” citations.<\/p>\n

Charlottesville may have its flashy Unite the Right torchlight parades and lethal looneys crashing into protesters; but Santa Cruz has institutionalized Hate against its poor, in discreetly dressed “Progressive”, “moderate”, or “smart solution” garb. \u00a0\u00a0 The “poverty crime’ tickets just keep on a coming; and the phony “beautification” campaign rolls on.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nAmid <\/span>President Obama’s ‘recovery’, President Trump’s ‘awesome economy’, and record high stock prices, Salt Lake City mayor Ben McAdams secretly entered the world of the homeless in Utah<\/strong> as he pondered a decision (that he knew would anger many residents) on the selection of a site for a third homeless resource center in his city.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

As Deseret News’ Katie McKellar reports<\/a>, for four months, McAdams has kept a secret<\/strong> (keeping it out of headlines, hoping to avoid the perception, he said, of a “publicity stunt in the face of human suffering”<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n

Back in March, just days before he was due by state law to select a third site for a new homeless resource center – a decision he knew would anger thousands of his constituents, regardless of his choice – McAdams left work on a Friday<\/span><\/span> with no money or ID and walked to Salt Lake City’s most troubled neighborhood.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dressed in jeans, sneakers and a hoodie, the county mayor spent three days and two nights walking and sleeping among the homeless and drug-addicted in Salt Lake City’s Rio Grande neighborhood.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His experience was “shocking” on multiple levels, he said.<\/strong> And while he by no means meant his experience to be an “expose” on the Road Home shelter, an important stakeholder in homeless services reform, his stay did shed light on some troubling realities within the 1,062-bed shelter, including:<\/p>\n
