Notices around the Town Clock&#8217;s COVID-19 \nRelief Center, jointly staffed by\n<em>Food Not Bombs, SC Homeless Union, HUFF, <\/em>and other community volunteers.&nbsp; <br><br>\n\nThe Center has been operating 24 hours a day, serving food and \nsupplies to those outside as City Manager Bernal, Mayor Cummings, City \nPR Megaphonestress Susie O&#8217;Hara, and Police Chief Mills have continued \nto ignore, harass, and\/or misinform the community.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<br><br>\n\nYesterday&#8217;s &#8220;no public allowed&#8221; City Council meeting defeated two \nattempts by the dying Progressive majority to (1) call an emergency \nmeeting within 48 hours to address homeless shelter and health issues \nbeing ignored at the Tuesday Council meeting; and\n (2) strengthen and lengthen the fluffy light and unenforceable eviction\n moratorium proposed by Mayor &#8220;Can&#8217;t Help&#8221; Cummings and Vice-Mayor \n&#8220;Merry Malice&#8221; Myers.<br><br>\n\nFor the last two nights, <em>SC Homeless Union <\/em>has taken the \nlead in distributing overnight motel vouchers paid for privately at that\n location (and last night from a parking garage).&nbsp; See\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.santacruzsentinel.com\/2020\/03\/24\/santa-cruz-homeless-activists-draw-coronavirus-shelter-battle-lines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.santacruzsentinel.com\/2020\/03\/24\/santa-cruz-homeless-activists-draw-coronavirus-shelter-battle-lines\/<\/a>\n for a slanted Sentinel take on the distribution.\n<br>\n\nWhile denouncing a &#8220;lack of the 6&#8242; safe distance&#8221; at the voucher \ndistribution on 3-23 and using that as the pretext to &#8220;cease and desist&#8221;\n order the vital Town Clock support center, Mills&#8217;s police cited an \nactivist for marking out 6&#8242; intervals on 3-24 in\n the parking garage for the 2nd voucher distribution.\nOne hypocritical hand washes the other.\n<br><em>Street Spirit\n<\/em>newspaper distribution operations are currently suspended, but the \nBerkeley vendor center is looking for ways to provide some interim \nsupport for vendors whose sales lifeline has been cut off.&nbsp; When HUFF \nhears, we&#8217;ll let the few vendors we have down here\n know.\n<br>\n\nFrequent local updates can be found on \nFacebook under Santa Cruz Food Not Bombs, Santa Cruz County Homeless \nAdvocates, Homeless Outside in Santa Cruz, and HUFF.&nbsp; As well as \noccasionally at <a href=\"http:\/\/indybay.org\/santacruz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indybay.org\/santacruz<\/a>.\n<br>\n\nIf anyone has seen the wandering coffee\n canister used to supply morning coffee to those outside which &#8220;walked \naway&#8221; yesterday, please ask it to come home!&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<br><br><br><br><strong>ACTIONS, RESOURCES, &amp; CONSIDERATIONS from a HUFFster&#8217;s perspective<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Check at\n<a href=\"https:\/\/nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffsantacruz.org%2FLostshows.html&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7Cbe47237cbd044309878208d7cb34f9d5%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637201300693666321&amp;sdata=M8j2kuYIAb5J9R3OjXzz7ACZB21GMeVWwSAic1NLyiY%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/www.huffsantacruz.org\/Lostshows.html<\/a>\n to hear a series of phoned-in reports from different activists and \nworkers&#8211;which should be posted shortly and will be updated daily if \npossible.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>&nbsp;City \nManager Martin Bernal provided a handful of portapotties&nbsp; City-wide and \ncold water washstands after refusing to do so for months, but maintained\n nighttime closure of bathrooms in parks in spite of the emergency \nsituation and repeated calls and e-mails. &nbsp; Nor has the County acted to \nprovide basic sanitary facilities for the poorest outside, though it has\n financial and organization resources to do so.<br>\n<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>City agencies have thwarted or denied\n<em>Food Not Bombs, the Depot Project, Bagels on Bikes, HUFF,\n<\/em>and other organizations their attempts to establish such vital resources.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Recent shutdowns at the Library, Louden Nelson, the Metro, the publicly sponsored\n<em>Bookshop Santa Cruz, <\/em>closed restaurants and businesses make this situation ever more dangerous both for folks outside and the broader community.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>No\n motel or hotel rooms are yet available for the 1000-2000 homeless \noutside who want and may need them to shelter more safely and securely \nin spite\n of government directives and financial grants.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>The\n inadequate &#8220;normal&#8221; charitable activities of those working with \nchurches, social services, etc. have been cut back or closed&#8211;many of \nthe staff\n of these organizations are over 60 and particularly vulnerable to the \ncorona virus.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Normal \ndonations to those directly seeking survival money through &#8220;panhandling&#8221;\n have been discouraged or criminalized under the new emergency regs,\n enacted without public discussion or vote.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Public\n transportation options have been restricted or shut down, making access\n to what limited resources there are even more problematic.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Mayor\n Cummings has issued no calls for an emergency Council meeting to pass \nelementary measures already done in other cities like a moratorium on \nevictions\n and rents.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>City \nManager Martin Bernal &amp; the City Council majority have a long \nhistory of resisting the expansion of basic services for the less \nprivileged in\n town.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Supervisor \nCoonerty and the Board of Supervisors have declined to provide \ncounty-wide resources in an equitable and sensible fashion.\n<br>\n<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>The health of the community depends on our community action through a direct and united response.<br>\n<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Up to now we have \nseen how &#8220;concerned&#8221; and &#8220;effective&#8221; local authorities have been in \nmeeting the needs of renters and those outside.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Meekly\n following the dictates of authority in this crisis has not in the past,\n nor likely in the future, to be a wise, health-providing, and \nproductive\n course.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>We must confront directly, clearly, persistently, loudly and immediately to secure the basic survival needs\n of the community in the current crisis.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>With\n washed hands and care to keep physical distance, bring food and \nyourselves to the noon food serving to sustain the survival effort and \ntake the\n necessary future steps.<\/strong><\/li><li>Contact\n<em>Food Not Bombs (575-770-3377), HUFF (831-423-4833), or the Santa Cruz Homeless Union (831-431-7766)\n<\/em>if unable to come for health or other reasons.
