\n\nMarty Mirabel, aka “Pirate”, showed up with a dozen protesters at \nthe County Building Monday (7-27) for a cancelled pre-trial court date. \nMarty was defending the vehicular home of a friend from 10+ cops two \nweeks before and charged with\n multiple felonies for “obstructing”, “battery” and such. \n
\n\nProtesters from HUFF (Homeless United for Friendship & \nFreedom), Food Not Bombs, and the broader community rallied in single \ndigit numbers and spoke broadly about recent police harassment of \nunhoused folks, particularly dangerous during\n the COVID pandemic. see “Emergency Protest–COVID-19 in S.C. \nAlso increasingly apparent is the City and County’s insistence on \nkeeping unhoused folks into unhealthy group shelters instead of \nproviding the motel and housing access funded by Project Roomkey and \nHousekey moneys.\n

\nThe Santa Cruz Homeless Union’s Safe Parking program, run by Alicia \nKuhl, is imperiled by a plan to restrip parking spots along Olive St. \nnear the Mission St. CVS in order to criminalize vehicular homes parked \nthere for a year or more.\n

\nAlready vehicle dwellers have been frightened away from Swanton and \nDelaware Streets with new signage, traffic cones, and police tape in \nviolation of Coastal Commission law that requires there be coastal \naccess for RV’s and vehicles.\n

\nThe local Coastal Commission agency is fundamentally in bed with city \nbureaucrats and the police and their “Drive the Homeless Out of Town” \nagenda in spite of the COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place requirements and the \nlong-term Coastal regulations.\n

\nSeveral years ago Councilwoman Richelle Niroynan’s anti-homeless “No RVs\n at night:” law was essentially vetoed by the Coastal Commission. \nDirect Action by Black Lives Matter activists, concerned with the \nattacks on unhoused people in Santa Cruz took down the fences around the\n Town Clock and the Post Office twice as well as the fences along the \nWater St. bridge overlook areas. HUFF activists will\n discuss preparing for future actions demanding authorities remove \nrestrictive signage and end harassment of vehicular residents at once at\n tomorrow’s HUFF meeting.\n
