BENCHLANDS RESISTANCE sponsered by SANTA CRUZ HOMELESS UNION, FOOD NOT BOMBS\u00a0 [FNB] ,<\/em> and HUFF<\/em>\u00a0 will meet again Friday September 16th<\/sup>\u00a0at 3 PM in the Benchlands directly down via the descending stairway from the access road between the Courthouse and the Lawn Bowling court\u00a0 to discuss Resistance Strategies , gather numbers, and increase solidarity among Benchlands residents and Community supporters\u00a0 as piecemeal tent demolition without alternative shelter approaches at Summer’s End.

<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>In the past, SANTA CRUZ SHITTY COUNCIL\u00a0 <\/em>refused to fund or even permit independent low-barrier agreement or transitional camps, nor to fund FNB<\/em>\u00a0 or the Footbridge Services <\/em>Program.\u00a0 On August 23rd, it transferred $1 million in state funding for the Coral St. Safe Sleeping Program to “Benchlands Closure and Restoration”.

<\/strong><\/em> Call 575-770-3377\u00a0 or 431-7766 to volunteer for the SC Homeless Union\u00a0 or show up at the Friday 9-16 3 p.m. meeting and volunteer.\u00a0 Still needed leadership and organizing help.\u00a0 President Alicia Kuhl still takes concerns and complaints.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also notable: City Council’s failure to use the $14.5 million to set up survival campgrounds outside the Benchlands and support those that exist!<\/u>\u00a0

Their principal goal seems to be to provide token shelter so they can restore the Sleeping\/Camping Ban (MC 6.36) aka the Camping Services and Standards Ordinance and resume their “hide out or get out” policy.\u00a0

They would circumvent the Martin v. Boise “no tickets without real shelter” ruling by setting aside 10 shelter spaces up at the Overlook encampment and claiming those who don’t take them are “service resistant” and so no longer protected by that ruling.
