Such images are used to villify homeless people and portray the worst case scenario as the norm.<\/em><\/div>\n<p><strong>Do Homeless People &#8220;trash&#8221; the Environment?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div><strong>What do the number say?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0by Becky Johnson<\/div>\n<div>September 23, 2012<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Santa Cruz, Ca.\u00a0 &#8212; After <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prweb.com\/releases\/2012\/4\/prweb9442739.htm\">a recent beach\/inland waterway clean-up<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saveourshores.org\/what-we-do\/accd.php\"><em><strong>Save Our Shores<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, the following formula was proffered: Litter Produced = (2.4 oz to 12.9lbs) per volunteer hour x hours worked. Since homeless encampments are found primarily in the inland waterway areas, those are the statistics we are most interested in.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em><strong>Save Our Shores<\/strong><\/em>reports that 550 volunteers picked up 850 lbs of trash (pollution) in 3 hours. So the average person picked up 4.6 lbs of trash at a rate of 1.54 lbs per volunteer hour.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-vRhI71KWJuc\/UF93OpvJVoI\/AAAAAAAABAE\/cfdAqLEE3wg\/s1600\/tent_300_257-Nov1-2011-OccupySantaCruz.gif\"><img src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-vRhI71KWJuc\/UF93OpvJVoI\/AAAAAAAABAE\/cfdAqLEE3wg\/s1600\/tent_300_257-Nov1-2011-OccupySantaCruz.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 <em>Photo of Occupy Santa Cruz encampment in San Lorenzo Park Nov 1 2011 Photo courtesy santacruz.com <\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The San Lorenzo River Clean-up produced 315 lbs of trash by 130 volunteers in 3 hours or 2.4 lbs of trash per person at a rate of 0.8 lbs per volunteer hour. While not as clean as <em><strong>Carmel River State Beach<\/strong><\/em>, 0.8lbs per volunteer hour is squeaky clean. Especially compared to the average found throughout the region during the entire beach\/waterways cleanup.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Perhaps homeless people are cleaning up more trash than they are leaving?<br \/>\nOr these are areas where<em><strong> Public Works<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Caltrans<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>Boy Scout<\/strong><\/em> groups clean up regularly?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0In any case, groups like <a href=\"http:\/\/takebacksantacruz.com\/about-us\/\"><em><strong>Take Back Santa Cruz<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzlive.com\/blogs\/dmillereditor\/2012\/09\/18\/breaking-camp-santa-cruz-cracks-down-on-illegal-sites\/\">editorials by <strong>Don Miller<\/strong> <\/a>in the <strong>SENTINEL<\/strong> can&#8217;t really claim that the\u00a0 sweeps are justified because of a clear environmental danger.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>City Council candidates <strong>Cynthia Mathews<\/strong>, <strong>Richelle Noroyan<\/strong>, and <strong>Pamela Comstock<\/strong> don&#8217;t have any evidence of an &#8220;environmental&#8221; reason for supporting the homeless sweeps.
