ACCESS NOT EXCUSES

Nonviolent Protest at 1220 River St. Campground Monday May 13, 2019 10:30 AM

demanding decent conditions in local campgrounds and shelters (for the few that actually endure those conditions).

The city has forced the community living behind Ross out into the doorways, yards and parks of Santa Cruz starting on May 3rd.  It has provided token shelter for a few at 1220 River St., 7th Ave Shelter, and Laurel St. Shelter.  Until recently, 1220 River St., also known as the Boneyard, surrounded by barbed wire, has enforced a “no visitors” policy.  It still has a “no exit on foot” policy.   Residents are crammed into 60 small tents.  Refugees from the Ross Camp have likely lost most of their possessions.  They are regularly searched on entering in prison-like procedures.

Many of the hundreds outside are being harassed and forced into an endless trek with no safe sanctuary. Join us in calling on the community to join together to support the Ross Camp Roughriders lawsuit against the City and to end the criminalization of the homeless.  City Council needs to direct its police and rangers to stop persecuting visible homeless people.  It needs to provide realistic alternatives that will include the formation of self managed transitional camps supported by local non-profits and city services.
In the meantime homeless people need to be allowed to shelter themselves and not be harassed under trespass on public property, closed public area, blocking the sidewalk, public nuisance and/or illegal lodging laws. Santa Cruz cruel City Council meets again on May 14.  There will be a protest at Council chambers at a time to be announced.

COMPASSION NOT EVICTION

Nonviolent Protest against the eviction of Heroes’ Camp Friday, May 3, 2019, on the levee behind Ross at 9 AM.

The city plans to force the community living behind Ross out into the doorways, yards and parks of Santa Cruz starting on May 3rd. Join us in calling on City Council to stop the evictions until the city has provided a realistic alternative that will include the formation of self managed transitional camps supported by local non-profits and city services.
Most of those who have lived at Ross Camp will need to find safety on the streets, doorways and parks. Some people might get to stay at the Santa Cruz Motel for five days. Sixty people may get to stay at 1220 River Street camp for 60 days. After that the 200 or more people at Ross Camp will be sleeping on the streets of Santa Cruz.

Ross Camp Clean-Up, Court Update, and Resistance Strategy Planning; 10 AM Sunday April 28th

While the Temporary Restraining Order is still in effect, court testimony continues tomorrow Monday April 29th in Federal Court in San Jose beginning at 10 AM.
Ross Camp residents need help cleaning up the camp to present evidence in court tomorrow.
They will also be discussing the settlement proposed by the City, which amounts to an agreement to disperse and no additional shelter than that proposed before (the temporary campground at the Benchlands in San Lorenzo Park until May 1st, the boneyard-barbedwire River St. Campground at 1220 River St., the 7th Ave. Shelter, and the Laurel St. Shelter, plus some Motel Vouchers and a few extra beds at the Paul Lee Loft).  The numbers are insufficient to house those at Ross.
Additionally residents will be discussing various alternatives for new places for shelter, since the City is unwilling to provide such shelter.
Come on down and help out.
