Update on Keith McHenry: Abbi Samuels   July 13 at 11:18pm ·

Keith McHenry just got out of the hospital last night after an emergency surgery on his back. His back was killing him on Sunday morning and he still did Food Not Bombs. Afterwards, he went to get an inexpensive massage. After which, he discovered he could not walk and his left leg fell out from under him. In the morning, he still couldn’t walk and fell down when trying to stand. He had to crawl to go to the bathroom. I took him to the emergency room. Seven hours later after an MRI, it was determined by a neurosurgeon he needed emergency back surgery since his nerve to his left leg was being compressed.

The surgery was the same time as the start of the Freedom Sleepers. We sleep at City Hall every Tuesday night to protest the sleeping ban and the criminalization of those living on the street. So I asked one of the awesome volunteers, Tyler, to go to city hall to let people know it wouldn’t be happening. Instead, everyone who usually sleeps out continued with the protest and food without us. They even had a literature table. This was so beautiful to get this news. Thank you Zav, Jesse, George, Kevin and Tyler for making it all happen! Sorry if I’m missing anyone.

Keith’s surgery was a success but it will be several weeks to possibly several months for him to walk without assistance.

While in the hospital, he got a surprise visit from one of our unhoused friends, Stanton, who rode his bike to the hospital. He arrived with a beautiful card he bought in which he asked people to sign. Over 25 people mostly living on the streets wrote beautiful messages to Keith. This touched Keith so deeply.

Keith has been working non-stop and maybe this is a blessing in disguise to slow down. We know that our local chapter and the Freedom Sleepers can rise to the occasion and fill Keith’s shoes. We love you all!!!!
